Which Grills Are Best to Grill Out?

As a passionate grilling enthusiast who loves to grill out, I firmly believe that cooking outdoors with the right grill can turn any meal into an enjoyable experience. There’s something magical about the smoky aroma and the sizzle of food on the grill that brings people together. In this article, I’ll guide you through the best grills to cook outdoors, offering helpful suggestions and reasons for my recommendations.

Types of Outdoor Grills

Before we dive into the specifics, let’s take a moment to explore the different types of outdoor grills available in the market. Each type has its unique characteristics that cater to different preferences and cooking styles.

Gas Grills

Gas grills are favored for their convenience and quick startup. They run on either natural gas or propane and offer precise temperature control. Ideal for busy grillers who seek a hassle-free grilling experience. These grills can be portable or built into an outdoor kitchen. Pros are the quick start-up, the precise temperature you can get with the turn of a knob, and low maintenance.  The Cons are the lack of achieving a full smoky flavor. You can add a smoke box but you will only get a hint of smokey flavor. Also, you are dependent on your supply of propane or gas. If that runs out you are out of luck and stuck moving your food back into the kitchen oven.

Charcoal Grills

For purists who crave that authentic smoky flavor when they grill out, charcoal grills are the go-to choice. They provide high heat and a traditional grilling experience, perfect for searing and slow cooking. It is hard to match the flavor that will infuse your food using a charcoal grill. The pros are you can reach high searing temperatures that a gas grill can not, it provides indirect grilling heat for slow or required foods, and is easily portable. The Cons are you still need to buy bags of charcoal and lighter fluid, it will take longer to get to the grilling temperature, requires more attention due to the flames and heat and there is additional clean up and disposal of ashes afterward which can be a bit dirty.

Electric Grills

Electric grills are excellent options for those living in apartments or if you just want to cook inside due to the weather.  They are very easy to use, simply plug them into an outlet and you are ready to cook. The pros are you will get an even and consistent heating surface, there is minimal cleanup, and they are smokeless and take up minimal space to store. The Cons are limited high-heat cooking, slower cooking times, and you are limited to get that smoky flavor. You may find yourself only using it when you are too lazy to use your main grill and just want a quick hamburger, chicken sandwich, or hotdog for 1 to 3 people.

Pellet Grills

Pellet grills combine the convenience of gas grills with the flavor of charcoal grills. They use wood pellets as fuel, adding a smoky taste to your food. Pellet grills are great for low-and-slow cooking. They provide so many different ways to grill your food. Pro’s are you can add different flavors of pellets based on the flavor you want, you can grill your food fast or slow and I feel this type of grill really gives you so many different types of grilling experiences. The  Con’s are if you load your hopper up with one flavor of pellets and want to change the flavor you have to unload the existing pellets and you may need a little extra room to store the different flavors of pellets.

Portable Grills

If you enjoy grilling on the go, portable grills are your best companions. They are lightweight, compact, and perfect for picnics, camping trips, and tailgating. These are the best option for owning a small grill that can be taken with you anywhere to grill out. Most of them are small, compact, and easy to transport with you.

Here Are Some Key Considerations Before Buying a Grill.

Cooking Space and Capacity: Assess how much cooking surface space you need on average based on the number of people and the amount of food you usually cook. Think about how much food you will cook and what temperatures you will need. For example, if you plan on only cooking meats you can get away with a smaller grill, but if you plan on cooking meats, vegetables, and other foods that require different temperatures at the same time you will need a large grate cooking surface or a grill with a 2nd level grate.

BTU (British Thermal Units) for Gas Grills: BTU rating indicates the heat output. Consider a grill with higher BTUs for quicker cooking.

Material and Build Quality: Look for durable materials like stainless steel or cast iron for longevity. Don’t be cheap when it comes to quality. Thicker and heavier material will hold the heat in better and grills with a built-in storage cabinet provide a more convenient place to store your grilling tools and cleaning supplies.

Temperature Control Features: For precise cooking, opt for grills with multiple heat zones and adjustable knobs. And consider a grill with a Bluetooth option that allows you to control the temperature from your phone.

Mobility and Portability: If you plan to move the grill frequently, choose a portable and easy-to-move option and definitely inspect the type of wheels it has to move your grill. Cheaper wheels mean when one breaks your grill is lopsided and unsafe.

Additional Features: Some grills come with side burners, rotisserie kits, or other extras that enhance versatility. With these factors in mind, let’s explore some of the best grills in each category: Side burners are great for cooking food that requires a pot.

Gas Grills

As someone who values efficiency, I highly recommend gas grills for their ease of use and quick setup. One model that stands out is the Monument Model #35633 / 4B Grill Side & Sear, which boasts a generous cooking area and high BTU output, propane or gas option, Stainless Steel Cabinet, Side Sear Burners, Clear Viewing lid, LED Controls, and a Built-in Thermometer which ensures even and fast cooking.

Charcoal Grills

For flavor enthusiasts, nothing beats the taste of food cooked over charcoal. The Weber Master-Touch 22″ Charcoal Grill-Smoke is an excellent choice, featuring an adjustable charcoal tray for heat control and a large grilling surface, a Compatible Cooking grate for BBQ inserts, a One-Touch cleaning system for hassle-free cleanup, a built-in Lid Holder, Warming Rack, Car Baskets, Tool Hooks, Precision heat Control Lid and is Rust-and-Crack Resistant.

Electric Grills

Electric grills are worth considering if you’re limited in space or seeking an eco-friendly option. The George Foreman Indoor/Outdoor Electric Grill 15-Serving offers precise temperature settings and is incredibly energy-efficient, has Nonstick Coating, Removable Stand,  Approved for Indoor use, and Removable Grill Grate Makes it Easy to Clean.

Grilling Accessories

With these core accessories, you are guaranteed to enjoy your grilling experience.

Grilling Out Tips and Techniques

Grilling is an art that can be perfected with the right tips and techniques. Preheating the grill before cooking ensures even heat distribution, while using the direct and indirect grilling method gives you control over the cooking process. Proper cleaning and maintenance of the grill prolong its life and keep it performing at its best. Don’t forget to experiment with marinades and seasonings to add depth and flavor to your dishes.

Safety Tips for Outdoor Grilling

While grilling is enjoyable, it’s essential to prioritize safety. Choose a well-ventilated location for your grill, especially if it’s a gas or charcoal model. When using a gas grill, check for propane leaks and handle the cylinder with care. This can be done by spraying soapy water on the connection and if it bubbles up that means gas is escaping, so check the seal. Additionally, follow proper charcoal handling guidelines to prevent accidents. Check out this link for grilling safety.

Conclusion

Grilling outdoors is an experience like no other, and the right equipment will make all the difference in creating delicious and memorable meals. Whether you prefer the convenience of gas grills, the traditional flavor of charcoal grills, or the versatility of electric or pellet grills, there’s a perfect match for every grilling enthusiast.

Once you have picked your grill and accessories, you are on your way to becoming a master griller. Don’t forget to apply a few grilling tips and techniques. Preheating your grill ensures an even cooking surface, using direct and indirect grilling methods allows you to control the heat for different cooking styles. Regular cleaning and maintenance of your grill not only ensures consistent performance but also extends its lifespan.
